May Travel
Hi Everyone. Sorry I have not had a post in some time. May has been a busy month of travel. The month started off with hitting several fashion shows in New York. When we go to the shows, we look for new trends and new vendors. The shows were great....lots of color popping up on tops...bright vivid colors! Also a lot of prints - anything from bohemian to geometric. After a few weeks of various shows, we hit stores in the Midwest to see what they look like. A big part of our job is making sure we are not only in our stores all the time, but also in competition stores. Store trips are always great and very eye opening. It is so beneficial for us to get to other regions of the country. We buy for the entire country, so while we are based in New England and it is frigid in the winter we have to remember and buy appropriately for our stores in Florida, Texas, So. Cal, etc... While most department stores buy far in advance of their selling window, we buy much closer so we can really turn around and affect our stores pretty quickly if something feels off in a region of the country. I am off to check out swimwear in stores!

So does that mean Marshall's can keep warm weather apparel and accessories in stores while it's actually still warm outside? Being in Texas, will I be able to see new inventories of sandals or swimwear in June/July/August?
Hey Mel - do you find that the buying trends in the various areas change in regards to trends/styles as well as seasonally appropriate items?

What a FUN job you have!

The buying trends do change from area to area. Some areas (i.e. Sportswear) are really tied to seasonality. Virtually all areas of the company have to deal with it in some capacity. It is not just about keeping the right body styles in stores, but also being aware of our colors on the floor and making sure we are flipping those appropriately as well. It is a challenge for us to ensure we are in front of it. Historically all retailers have flipped their floors over to the next season before we really have started the season we are in....so a lot of times customers are looking at Fall apparel when it is 80-90 degrees outside!!! The customer has been changing to more and more of a buy now wear now mode, which we have to respond to. Ultimately our customers needs and wants are the most important factor, so we do our best to try and respond to what they are telling us they want. Our job keeps us on our toes every day, every second....but there is nothing else better or like it!!!!

This is probably the most annoying thing when shopping. I'm always a late bloomer when shopping for seasons. Usually the stores are well within the season before I even take a look. Seeing as I live in a real small town, it sure would be nice if stores were more "in the season".
