Teen/kid shopping techniques

Can anyone remember the teen back to school disaster shopping trips? My son and I used to always wind up ill with each other by the end of the day. “No Mom I don’t like that” or “that has got to be the ugliest shirt you’ve picked out today”. It was a relief when I turned him loose to pick out his clothes himself. I’d go off browsing and let him gather and try on things himself. We’d meet up at an assigned time and (after me checking price tags) would make the purchase.

What type of solution works the best for you and your kids/teens?
